Local artist Janice Wagner will teach a new slate of small art classes this Spring at the Pacific Northwest Salmon Center. The classes will span eight weeks and will be available to elementary through middle school students. An artist for over 25 years, Janice is a certified arts educator with a master’s degree in arts education. This will be Janice’s second year to teach classes at the Salmon Center.
“We are pleased to build on our strong partnership with Janice,” says Executive Director Ted Smith. “Janice brings a deep level of commitment to her work and we see eager students of all ages benefiting from her advice.”
Janice is excited to teach again at “such an awesome location.” She adds that “the unspoiled beauty calms us as we learn more about conservation issues.” Janice shares a personal reflection to her teaching experience, stating that “the mission of the Salmon Center has challenged me to integrate art and nature in ways I hadn’t fathomed before. I’ve become more of a scientist. Instead of seeing our surroundings as a landscape painter, I’m involved at a microscopic level, even imagining underwater scenes.”
Students will learn about plants and animals native to wetlands and local streams, with particular emphasis on their connection to wild salmon. Educating about the needs of salmon, whose life cycle ranges from upland streams to Alaskan waters, provides the students with a dynamic range of artistic expression. Their art will encompass everything from algae and plankton to forests and mountains while they explore the delicate ecosystem that sustains a healthy salmon habitat.
